Reducing Yosemite Toad Mortality

In 2017, the Forest Service documented 88 Yosemite toads (a threatened species) that had been run over and killed on a two-mile stretch of the 9S09 road between June and October. Since toads are highly terrestrial and move around all summer (especially during rain events) adapting culverts or waterways was not the whole answer. Stephanie Barnes, Sierra National Forest Fisheries/Aquatic Biologist, will discuss the installation of an elevated road segment over this mortality ‘hotspot,' a project designed to help protect toads over their terrestrial habitats. The 9S09 road gets a lot of use from OHV recreationalists as it is the easiest access to Bald Mountain Base Camp. Join us for the monthly meeting of the Tehipite Chapter of the Sierra Club and learn about saving the toads! Free and open to the general public.
